Chapter Twelve

Riley

She walked into the apartment and I was ready for her. I’d just lit the candles on the table and put her name on the card. I told myself not to let it show on my face that I was irritated that she was nineteen minutes later than she said she’d be. Dinner was getting cold. At least she went where she said she’d be–this time. I’d have snapped if she was anywhere else. I’d have had to cancel the whole darn meal.

She put her backpack on the floor next to the couch. She knows I hate that. I always trip over it when I go to lock the door; another thing she forgets to do herself. Not that she notices simple things like that and how hard I work to protect her.

She smiled that fake new smile of hers and I smiled back. She seemed too distracted to notice that I was intentionally overdoing it. I told myself to play it cool. I said the lines I’d rehearsed:

“I’m really sorry, Princess. I didn’t mean for things to get out of hand. Sometimes, you just make me so mad. You’re always doing silly things and it makes me so angry.” I said.

She nodded and looked at the floor, whispering, “It’s okay”.

I kissed her and let her lay her head on my chest, wondering if she had any intention of saying anything more. Instead, she basically ignored my apology. It did feel good to hold her again, so I was the bigger man and just let it go. I’m good like that, yo.

I grabbed her hand and led her to the kitchen, hoping dinner hadn’t burned again. I wasn’t about to make it a fourth time. I’m not a chick. Three times were enough for a lifetime and this wouldn’t be happening again. Take it or leave it, Princess.

She smiled, for real this time, when she took it all in.

“I wanted to show you how much I appreciate you.” A little appreciation in return—say some head—might be nice.
